Renate Ulbrich teaches American literature and culture at Humboldt-Universität. Her fields of interest are: utopian, dystopian and science fiction literature, urban literature, postmodern urban culture developments (theme parks and themed environments in the USA and Germany), and cultural geography in general.

"California Dreamin'": Utopian and Dystopian Images of Space

Renate Ulbrich's article "California Dreamin'" analyzes utopian and dystopian images of particularly urban space in California, interrogating in how far the American dream is a Californian dream, and how this dream has fared in fictions like Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust, Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia and Sam Shepard's True West.
