Kathrin Stoffregen:
Blue Velvet - a Love Story or a Story of Love and Violence?

The paper is going to present some introductory facts and aspects on the movie "Blue Velvet", directed by David Lynch. The movie is rated a masterpiece of a suspense thriller. However, due to the great amount of sexual scenery, the amount of violence (both physical and psychical) and the often "strange" settings by Lynch, the movie has also led to heated debates on what can be shown in public.

Interesting is also the kind of actors staring in the movie. With Rossilini, MacLachlan and Hopper, major Hollywood stars appear on the screen in a way they never did before, showing not only their skills in acting but also parts of their real personality (or not?).

Since the movie raises those topics, the discussion is likely to cover topics like the nature of sex and/ or violence, the idea of domination and of course the role of violence in the field of love, vanity and jealousy as well as the connection of male/ female figures to certain patterns of behavior and violence.
